about

A survivor's anthem, "REAL Love" encourages those seeking romantic love to love themselves first. "So often, we as humans get so caught up in getting someone else to love us that we allow anything, including disrespect and abuse. I hope that someone hears this song and realizes that real love doesn't hurt."

"Writing this song was my 'rise from the ashes', so to speak," Phoenix says "When I was in my own situation, my abuser was very controlling about where I could go and who I could hang out with. Many musicians are male so I clearly was limited in what I could do musically. When I got away from the situation, I really just enjoyed my freedom again. By pure chance, one night a year later I ended up in a New York studio with a friend from high school who played me this slow, bass-heavy track that I originally thought would be a sexy love song. When I locked myself in a closet in the studio, however, I emerged with "REAL Love".

lyrics

v1:
I don't know if
we're gonna last another day
living this way
baby
I can't take it
when I try to communicate
you wanna laugh
and when I try to walk away
you block my path, when you get mad
I know real love
and it doesn't feel this way
love wouldn't drag me down
into a fight/every night
love wouldn't put holes in the walls
my blood on your hands
love doesn't apologize
and then do it agan

chorus:

real love
wouldn't hold me back/wouldn't tear me down
make me wish that I never existed
real love
its what I got for me
what you gon do when you see
i'm not coming back

v2:
I don't know why
I keep wasting my time
listening to lies
baby/ I've had enough
cuz I know real love
would always do right
when I sacrifice
so much for you
and loving you was my only mistake
you keep saying you'll change
but change never comes
my tears always there
to awaken the sun
